Web Currency

What is Web Currency?

Web currency can be defined as anything that a search engine may look for as a ranking signal. These ranking signals are valuable when it comes to getting a particular website found because the more ranking signals that point to a particular site, the higher up in the search engines it will appear.

Popular current forms of web currency include things like links, Likes, Shares and Tweets although the exact relative value of each of these forms of web currency is a closely-guarded secret by the search engines.

From Jeff Jarvis in 2005:

Just remember this: In this new world, links are currency. Links grant authority. Links build branding. Links equal value.

And as social media has evolved, so have the search engines where now not only do links equal value, but so do other things such as Tweets, Likes and Shares.
