When it comes to getting your website ranked in today’s world, things are a little different than it has been in the past. Link schemes, games, paid links and spam are directly in the sights of the search engines as something they are trying to eliminate and as a result – getting a site ranked well means some of the “old stuff” that worked in the past no longer works.

As a result of these efforts, one of the common questions that we get is:

Is there any way for a search engine to track my site that I have registered with linkdip?

The short answer to this question is … yes and no.

No, linkdip Doesn’t Leave a Footprint

Building links from websites you own or control to content you choose (nothing is automated) is one of the best things about the linkdip system. With linkdip, when someone you are connected to requests a link to a piece of content, it is easy to build a link from your site to the piece of content with just a few clicks of the dipit button.

It is possible to build a link and get rewarded on the linkdip platform in one of two ways:

You can manually build the link and put the URL of the new link:

Or, you can push the dipit button and have the linkdip system make it easy to build the link – as long as you have registered your site and verified it.

Registering Your Site in linkdip

Registering your site in linkdip is a 2-3 step process and involves registering it both in the system and verifying that you are the owner or administrator of the site.

Step 1
Register as the owner of a site, complete the information and get a meta tag for verification purposes. The meta tag that is generated is a string of random characters and numbers.

Step 2
Insert the verification tag on your site. Once meta tag is in place, simply click the “verify” button.

Step 3
Remove the meta tag from your site (if desired).

After you have verified the site, you are free to remove the meta tag from your site. The linkdip system does not require that you maintain a meta tag for verification on your site, it just verifies that it is there once.

Yes, linkdip Leaves a Footprint

If you are a paranoid type, chances are you will still be asking “Is there any way that someone can see what sites I have within the linkdip system?

Yes.

Currently, linkdip allows people you are connected to see what sites you have registered on linkdip on your profile page.

Depending on any number of factors, we may at some point decide to change whether we allow people to see sites registered with linkdip – but currently we have left it this way because we think that linkdip only makes the task of linking easier.

Logged into linkdip lately?

If you have, chances are good that you noticed more than just a few minor updates to the linkdip system.

We have been working hard (for months!) to bring you an updated user interface that makes sharing ranking signals easier than ever before. We are now rolling out the new UI and have some cool new features that we will be covering in upcoming blog posts.

One of the most popular new features is the “Name Your Points” feature. The Name Your Points feature allows you to set the number of points that you are willing to give to someone who performs an action on your request.

How Much Is It Worth … To You?

It used to be that a like was worth 2 points, a tweet was worth 1 point and a +1 was worth 5 points. But what are they really worth?

Chances are that they are worth different amounts to different people at different times.

With the new platform, you can now set your own price that you are willing to give up in exchange for your friends liking, tweeting or digging your stuff.

Willing to only give up a few points for an old blog post that you don’t really care about to get more likes on Facebook?

Expect some of your friends to go ahead and like it.

Willing to give up lots of points to get your most recent blog post more likes?

Expect more of your friends to like it!

Really want people to retweet a tweet for you?

Now it is possible to offer more points as part of your request rather than just the default 1 point and it is easy to do it at the time you make a request.

Now that you can set your own price for what you are willing to give up, there is no such thing as too much or too little — it is all about the free market.

Another member of the growing linkdip community has covered linkdip on their blog. Jason Fox does a nice job of explaining some of the important elements when it comes to SEO and how linkdip can help you grow your SEO pretty easy.

From Jason’s Post:

What is the Free SEO Tool?

It is a website called Linkdip. It is FREE. It is pretty easy. It will get your Blog or Website Votes. IT IS NOT AUTOMATED. That means you do have to login and ask for what you want. You also need to return the favor.

Is This Manipulating the System?

It could be. But, there are other business minded people on this site that provide great content and run AWESOME blogs. DON’T SHARE CONTENT YOU DO NOT THINK IS GOOD!

There is plenty of great content on the site that you can share in return without sacrificing your values.

Thanks to Jason for helping spread the word about linkdip! My personal favorite part of his post? This one:

DON’T SHARE CONTENT THAT YOU DO NOT THINK IS GOOD.

Amen.

Maybe taking out ad space on Shoemoney’s blog isn’t a bad idea after all.

One recent linkdip user found us through our banner campaign on Shoemoney’s site and after he created an account, logged in and started using it, shared his thoughts with the world on his blog BloggingDudes.com.

An excerpt:

Within linkdip I found a cool little community. It’s pretty simple to join and then register your sites on the system. The basic premise is that people request Facebook likes, Twitter tweets and retweets, Google +1′s, diggs and links to URLs and sites that they want promoted.

There is no paid linking or “click farming”…it’s just a simple request. You’re under no obligation to do so. When someone requests one of those social media actions you can go to the URL and check it out. If it calls out to you then you can do whatever they requested that you do….if it doesn’t then you don’t have to. Pretty simple and fair.

I’ve mostly requested “+1′s” for my stuff so far and the response has been pretty nice. People do request links but I haven’t done so yet. I just haven’t found the URL or topic that I could link to on any of my blogs and I definitely don’t want to just start throwing up unrelated links on any of my blogs. That would be suspicious and cheesy.

The main reason I like linkdip is the relaxed atmosphere. You don’t have to do what you don’t want to do. It’s that simple. Another reason I like linkdip is that because I am pretty big on Twitter and Google +, but rarely do I much with Facebook and Digg on any of my sites. I don’t know why…but they just don’t call out to me like the others. However, there are people on linkdip that have pretty large Facebook followings and do a lot with Digg. So, I can leverage their social media footprint with mine and get the best of both worlds..and vice versa.

A few highlights we liked in his review:

There is no paid linking or “click farming” … its just a simple request.

You are under no obligation to do what people request.

If you see something someone requests and like it, you are free to fulfill the request — or not.

If you add those three things up: making requests, analyzing requests, acting on requests — that is the essense of what so many people today are referring to as web curation.

linkdip makes web curation actionable and fun.

linkdip is starting to have more and more people see the power in human web curation. People are linking, liking, tweeting and +1′ing to relevant content — which is really the definition of human web curation.

And as people experience the power in exchanging ranking signals, something interesting is happening – they are sharing their experience by blogging about it.

Consider what one linkdip user blogged about today regarding linkdip:

More Google Plusses For Your Real Estate Site

For anyone serious about ranking well in the search engines then social media needs to be part of your gameplan. Google really wants a share of the social media market and is not going to give up until it suceeds. What better way to leverage themselves in social media then incorporating social into their algorythm. You may already have seen in google results little icons that show some of friends who like particular websites.

Google already has begun incorporating social into their search results and is only going to get bigger. This is why I believe it is important for real estate agents now more than ever to network with other real estate agents, local bloggers and businesses to get your name out their in social media circles. Google Plus is going to be a big factor in my opinion on how your website comes up in the search results and having a social media prescence is going to be vital.

What are some ways to gain more likes, plusses, and retweets?

Recently I came across a new site called Linkdip which I found from Arizona Realtor Dean Ouellette who also runs a blog productivity tools . Linkdip is a social network which allows people to share each others websites, tweets, Google plusses,Diggs, etc. They also have a feature which I haven’t utilized yet where you can get real estate backlinks. I highly recommend this site for Realtors looking to optimized their social presence and get a jump start on the rest of the pack. There are already many top Realtors using this site like Dean Ouellette , Jay Thompson and more.

How is your experience of linkdip? Blog about it and get featured on the linkdip blog!

As more and more people are learning about linkdip, more and more questions are coming our way. One of the most common questions (to paraphrase) is:

How do I not suck at linkdip?

The truth is, it is hard to actually suck at linkdip – it is designed so that the more you put into it, the more you can get out of it. You contribute to the platform by liking, linking, tweeting, +1′ing or digging content that your friends have requested you to review.

Once you have established that you are contributing by liking, linking, tweeting or +1′ing your friend’s relevant content, you can then start seeing what the power of linkdip can do for you by making your own requests for links, likes, tweets or +1′s.

The concept is simple: give first, then get.

Still looking for more direction as to how exactly linkdip works? Here is an excerpt from an email I sent to a friend explaining “what to do once you have signed up for linkdip”.

What To Do Once You Have Signed Up For linkdip

From an email I sent to a friend and new linkdipper:

Yo!

Saw you signed up.

I am on the road, but I thought it would be worth shooting a few random thoughts at you.

1. Friend as many people as possible.
We are working on some friend enhancements, but for now, just friend as many people as possible. The reason is you won’t see their activity unless you are their friend. You can find friends by going to friends (on the left navigation) and then clicking on the big blue button at the top introducing you to the new people at linkdip.

You can also find friends on the right side – just click on them, then when you see their profile, you can friend them up.

2. Make requests.
Go make requests for likes, tweets, +1′s, diggs first. They are easy to get and people will give them to you. You will be amazed.

3. After you have gotten the hang of getting likes, tweets, +1′s, diggs – then go in and request a few links.
Use simple words as your anchor text / keyword requests — stuff like “real estate” is good, stuff like “chandler arizona homes for sale” is bad.

It is a 2 sided marketplace thing — think ebay: when you have 200 people on ebay listing stuff, it isn’t so cool. When you have 2 million: lookout.

So until we get more users, I give the advice to keep keyword/anchor text in a link request simple.

4. Expect bugs — we are killing them as we see them.
People are starting to talk about linkdip and as more people get on, we are finding more. Fine. Send me your bugs and I will personally make sure we squash them.

5. Talk about it with people you know.
The more people who use it, the better. It is free.

6. Look for the much “bigger idea” of what linkdip can become to come later.
For now, it is just a super easy way to curate content and like, link, tweet whatever else – stuff that you think should be liked, linked to, tweeted, whatever.

Don’t like the content? Dont’ like, tweet, +1 it, etc.

Have fun.

We seem to be making organic traction and will starting adding users by the 1,000′s in the coming months — which will help your activity a lot. Translation: if you request a term for the keyword “real estate”, don’t be surprised to see people in March of next year building you links, not just today. Once you put a keyword request in, it stays there forever!

Talk to you soon.

– Justin

One of the strongest ranking signals for the search engines is a link from a credible source. linkdip makes it easy to request links and build links from your own content to things that you want to build links for.

linkdip is not an automated link building tool. Everything inside of linkdip requires a human eye, human decisions and human action.

Many times people who build links for their site will want to build links in an automated way. We think automated link building tools are – quite frankly – going to be a thing of the past at some point.

Building Links If Your Content Is In WordPress

If the websites that you have registered with the linkdip system are WordPress sites, linkdip offers a super-simple way to build links: the dipit button.

Step 1
When scanning through the requests tab, simply push the dipit button and a box will appear asking you which content you want to scan.

Step 2
Select the site and number of posts or pages you want to scan and push the submit button.

Step 3
If linkdip finds the requested keyword in the content you asked it to search, it will return the options you have to build a link from. If linkdip doesn’t find the keywords requested, it will go through your a list of all the keywords other linkdip users have requested and see if any of those keywords are found in your content.

It will then give you an option of building links for any of these other keywords that users have requested.

Building Links If Your Content Is NOT In WordPress

If the websites that you have registered with the linkdip system are not based on WordPress, we have still made it easy to build links – although it may require a little more work on your part.

Step 1
Build the link on your site however you “normally” build the link.

Step 2
Put the URL where you built the link in the comment box.

Step 3
Push the comment/link button. Once you have submitted a link in the comment section, the linkdip spiders will verify that you have built the link and reward you accordingly.

Building links and getting rewarded for reviewing requests for links that people have and linking to those things that you think are link-worth is made simple in linkdip.

It isn’t an automated link program, it makes it easier to find relevant content and link to it.

linkdip.

The easiest way to build links from your sites – and get rewarded for it.

It wasn’t very long after Google announced the new +1 button that people started selling +1′s.

Although I can’t be 100% certain about how many they are selling, I can only assume one thing:

They are selling at least a few.

But why?

New on linkdip: Share The +1 Button

Our latest feature allows you to share +1′s when you think something deserves it. Have you just written a blog post that you think is worthy of people looking at and deciding whether or not to +1 it?

Make a request for people to give you a +1 … and watch what happens.

Are you looking to get points back in your account after requesting links for other content and getting those links from people?

Scan the requests for what you think is worth a +1.

The +1 button: a powerful new ranking signal that will help your website get more visibility.

Don’t buy +1′s – share them.

One of the most common questions I get from people who aren’t professional SEO’s is:

How do I get more links to my website?

Most people are aware that links are one of the key ranking signals that can help their site get more visibility and so it is by far the most common question I get. Whenever I am asked this question my answer will depend on a few things:

how knowledgeable the person is about their site and SEO in general

how many other people were around

how much time I wanted to spend with the person

how many “tricks” I wanted to teach them

Depending on the answers to the above questions, my answer could vary widely — everything from “gee, I don’t know, ask someone else to spending a few hours discussing quite a few things that were possible to do that would help gain links.

It has been my experience that the profession of SEO has become one where there are quite a few “tricks” that people can use to get more links.

Some of these tricks are unofficially labeled ok by the search engines and some of these tricks have been explicitly labeled bad by the search engines – which has resulted in a bunch of don’t ask, don’t tell scenarios when it comes to building links for a particular website.

So building links is kind of like magic, right?

Not necessarily.

Building links to your site doesn’t need to be any more complicated than building something worth linking to and then asking your friends to link to it.

First, Build Something You Are Proud Of

Often times when talking about link building, experts will say something similar to “build something worth linking to” – and they are dead on when they say that. In order to get good links, it is 100% vital that you build something worth linking to.

The easiest way to test if you think something is worth linking to is to ask yourself “am I proud of that?” and if the answer is yes, then chances are it is going to be worth linking to.

Second, Ask Your Friends For Links

Now the tricky part is “now that I have produced something I am proud of, how do I get people to link to it?” and that is where all of the expert advice goes silent.

I haven’t heard any expert when it comes to SEO mention anything about how to get people to link to what you are proud of other than something similar to just hope. So – if you build it, they will come?

No.

Don’t be afraid to ask your friends to link to that piece of content that you are proud of.

(BTW – in linkdip it is easy to ask for a link or a retweet or whatever)

Example Retweet Request

All you can do is ask.

If you ask someone to link to your stuff and they don’t because they think it is garbage – the good news is they don’t have to tell you they don’t like it – they simply don’t link to it.

Everyone knows plenty of proud moms with ugly babies – and just because someone thinks the baby is ugly doesn’t mean they tell the mom.

linkdip Makes Showing Off Your Content and Asking For Links Easy

linkdip makes it possible to show off the content that you are proud of and ask your friends to link to it, like it, tweet it or +1 it.

Will your friends think your content is worth linking to, liking or tweeting?

They might.

But you will never know until you ask.
